La ministre responsable de la Langue française, Nathalie Roy, rappelle à l’ordre la mairesse de Montréal à la suite de son faux pas « in English », survenu mardi en pleine annonce économique dans la métropole.
« Sans vouloir commenter directement les décisions de la mairesse Plante, je tiens à rappeler l’importance de célébrer le fait français à Montréal et de valoriser la langue officielle de la métropole francophone des Amériques », a déclaré au Journal la ministre responsable de la Langue française, Nathalie Roy, par la bouche de son attachée Brigitte Roussy.
Mardi matin, Valérie Plante a pris la parole pour accueillir trois nouvelles entreprises en intelligence artificielle.
Mais à part un timide « Bon matin à tous et à toutes » et un « Merci » à la fin, son discours était entièrement en anglais.
Ce geste a déplu au cabinet de la ministre qui l’a encouragée à plus de vigilance.
« Notre gouvernement tient à faire preuve d’exemplarité quant au respect de la primauté du français au Québec et nous invitons tous les élus à faire de même », a-t-elle dit.
Piqué au vif
Joint par Le Journal, le président de la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal (SSJBM), Maxime Laporte, a quant à lui été piqué au vif.
« Dans ses représentations publiques, ce n’est pas “Valérie” qui parle. C’est “Madame la mairesse”. Elle a un rôle à jouer de représentativité », a-t-il martelé.
Mardi, en mêlée de presse après l’événement, quand Le Journal a demandé à la mairesse quel message elle envoyait en s’adressant seulement en anglais aux invités, elle a d’abord refusé de répondre à la question.
« Je suis la mairesse de la plus grande métropole francophone à travers l’Amérique du Nord, et j’en suis très fière. Est-ce qu’il y a d’autres questions ? » a-t-elle lancé au Journal, visiblement irritée.
Mea culpa
Plus tard en soirée, Valérie Plante s’est défendue sur Twitter.
Mea culpa, a-t-elle écrit. Je suis sortie de mon texte ce matin en m’adressant à un parterre d’investisseurs étrangers en intelligence artificielle. Ma communication aurait dû être principalement en français », a-t-elle écrit.
Mme Plante a aussi indiqué qu’elle opte souvent pour des discours bilingues lors d’annonces à saveur internationale.
« En général, dans tout ce qui est international, je le fais en français et anglais », a-t-elle partagé.
« Je comprends qu’en sortant d’ici, je vais m’assurer de peut-être plus suivre mon plan », a-t-elle conclu.

Bon matin à tous et à toutes. Good morning and welcome to Montreal. I have the great privilege of being the mayor of an amazing city. This is Montreal. It is a great privilege but I got to say it is also a big responsability because we are the metropolis of the province of Quebec.
That means that our economy needs to be strong. We need to be attractive for talents, for tourists. It means it has to be always more investments because we want to continue to grow. It also means for me that we need to make sure that it is an affordable place to live and the quality of life is fantastic because we know investments brings investments. Talents attract talents. But I have to say I am particularly lucky because here, in Montreal, I am not doing this alone. I have amazing partners.
Of course, I am thinking about of Montreal International and Investissement Québec and all the other people in this room that has been contributing to the ecosystem. So I want to say that having three new companies contributing to the big family to the ecosystem of AI is amazing. On that front, I also want to talk about M. [Yoshua] Bengio who chose two years ago to live here to do his research here because he believed in Montreal and for that I am really grateful because with your work and the work of the two universities, Université de Montréal, Université McGill, with MILA, with Microsoft that chose to come here and Facebook, and Google, as well, it is actually created this great ecosystem. This is why today having QuantumBlack, WinningMinds and BIOS joining the big family of AI is amazing and I am really proud of that. I guess I can resume everything I said by saying “teamwork”, because the ecosystem is strong because we belive in Montreal…
As the mayor of Montreal, I will continue working with our partners welcoming new investments and new companies like yours. Welcome to Montreal.
